So Fall has officially arrived. Leaves have changed to a multitude of hues, the grass doesn’t need cutting and elections are over, beautiful days & cold nights; Fall is here.
I find this change of season to be inspiring. The new colors, crisp air, and lack of sunlight draws my imagination out. Now is the time to start the big projects, when there will be nothing but the cold for the next few months. Now is the time to draw & color, pretend I’m back in kindergarten.
So let the clean air & fall colors inspire. Come by and talk to us, who knows we may have the perfect sketch for a new piece, or just the write twist for something you’ve had in mind.

Well, the convention on halloween weekend in pittsburgh went well. We got to meet some great people, do some beautiful tattoos and catch up with some good friends we don’t get to see very often!
We also won a few awards, Ron won 2nd place in the “Best Portrait” category for a portrait of Aleister Crowley on Ross Lloyd, Jim won 2nd place in the “Black n Gray” category for a portrait of the Predator on one of our friends, Justin and Ryan won 3rd place in the “Color” category for a full biomechanical chest tattoo on another friend of ours, Ray.
So overall the weekend was a nice getaway and a group success as usual!

Well, soon there will be a blanket of misery covering northeast ohio called snow. And while this is a depressing season (for me at least), it’s also the BEST time of the year to get tattooed. You don’t have to worry about the sun beating down on your new tattoo, or swimming as well as lots of other reasons. So don’t wait til spring and rush in wanting your tattoo done before the nice weather, get it done now so it is healed and looking good come spring!

What is copyright?
Copyright is the legal right that artists have to determine how their works are used or reproduced.
There are two aspect to copyright;
Firstly, it protects the artist’s right against piracy or illicit use.
Secondly, it provides the incentive for artists to create.
Copyright provides additional income for artists derived from the reproduction, adaptation, distribution, performance and display of their own work.
When does copyright apply to a work of art?
As soon as an artist creates a work of art, it is protected by copyright. Artists (or their agents) then have the right to determine how and when a work can be reproduced. Although copyright laws vary from country to country, generally the duration of copyright is 70-75 years after the death of the artist. After this time, the work is no longer under copyright and can be reproduced without additional clearance or fees. Any artwork created by a living artist or an artist deceased fewer than 70 years may be subject to copyright. As such, the artist or their representative must be contacted for copyright clearance and they are entitled to royalties.
From the information above you can see that copyright does indeed apply to tattoos.
If an artist designed a tattoo then the copyright remains with the artist unless he/she expressly passed the copyright on, therefore even if you get a unique tattoo design inked on to your body the copyright for the artwork remains with the designer/artist and can NOT be reproduced for any reason without the WRITTEN CONSENT of the original artist. Reproduction of any design without written consent of the artist is copyright infringement and is subject to prosecution.

I was having a conversation last night with a buddy of mine, Paul Croney out of Needles of Fury in PA. He was relating a story about never selling any prints of his art in the area. Two years running and he hadn’t sold any at the Meeting of the Marked. It made him start to question if the stuff was any good, ‘maybe it’s really bad and I just can’t see it’ kinda of stuff.
Well Paul packs his gear and heads of to FLA for the Tried & True convention. He faithfully brings his prints with him, hell they don’t take up that much space. Well it turns out that the crowd in FLA really dug his stuff. He sold 30+ prints in a couple of days. See Paul, your stuff doesn’t ’suck’.
The moral of the story? Well there’s two. For the artists out there, keep at it. Don’t forget that the definition of insanity is repeating the same actions & expecting different results. So keep at, but try a new approach, you’ll find your audience. For the collector/enthusiast don’t forget to thank your artist. Show some enthusiasm. Personally one of the best things about this work is seeing the clients reaction when a piece is finished. Let your artist know you appreciate the effort they put into creating your work.
